The history of Eid-Al-Adha is closely tied to the Hajj pilgrimage, which is one of the five pillars of Islam. Eid-Al-Adha is celebrated on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijjah, at the time of Hajj, when millions of Muslims make the journey to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam. During Eid-Al-Adha, those who can afford it perform the symbolic act of animal sacrifice. This act honours Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son and Allah’s mercy in providing a ram as a substitute. The meat from the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts: one part for the family, one part for friends and relatives, and one part for the needy.
The holiday is marked by special prayers, social gatherings, and giving to charity, reflecting the spirit of generosity and compassion in the Muslim community. It’s a time for Muslims to remember the trials of Abraham and to celebrate the strength of faith and obedience to Allah’s will. Eid-Al-Adha is not only a reflection of historical events but also a reminder of the importance of sacrifice and charity in Islam.
