The Middle Eastern landscape is famed for more than just its honey-hued deserts and closeness to the Red Sea. It is home to Islam’s two holiest cities Makkah and Al Madinah. Apart from these two, there are plenty of wonderful sacred places to explore in Saudi Arabia. Bus trips with their carefully designed itineraries allow pilgrims to immerse themselves fully in each place’s spiritual environment, which facilitates a comprehensive exploration of these sacred destinations.

We are talking about everything from massive mosques like Al Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah and Al Masjid An Nabawi in Al Madinah, to the battle-memorial Mount Uhud. Beyond that, you will find the sculpted temples of Madain Saleh, also known as the second Petra. Muslim pilgrims visit these holy sites regularly, not only for religious reasons but also for their historical significance.

Here are some holy and historical sites that add bus trips to the overall pilgrimage experience, encouraging a sense of solidarity and collective dedication.

  • Masjid al-Haram (Makkah al-Mukarramah)

The Masjid al-Haram is located in Makkah – Islam’s holiest site. It is the location of the Kaaba, a cube-shaped structure that is believed to have been constructed by Abraham and Ishmael. The Kaaba is wrapped in a black cloth known as the Kiswa and is encircled by a prayer courtyard.

  • Masjid an-Nabawi (The Prophet’s Mosque)

After Makkah’s Masjid al-Haram, the Prophet’s Mosque is Islam’s second biggest holy site. It was constructed by the Prophet Muhammad himself and is located in Al Madinah. The mosque is a collection of structures that includes the main prayer hall, the Prophet’s grave, and the Quba Mosque, Islam’s oldest mosque.

  • Madain Saleh (Al Ula City)

Madain Saleh is an old city in Saudi Arabia’s northwestern region. It was the capital of the Nabataean monarchy, which existed in the early centuries of the Christian era. Madain Saleh is a UNESCO World Heritage site with well-preserved tombs and monuments.

  • The Museum of Mada’in Saleh (The Museum of Nabataean Kingdom)

The Mada’in Saleh Museum is located in Madain Saleh and has a collection of Nabataean kingdom artefacts. The museum is an excellent resource for learning about Nabataean history and culture.

  • Fahad’s Fountain (Jeddah Fountain)

King Fahd’s Fountain, popularly known as the Jeddah Fountain is a fountain in the Saudi city of Jeddah. It is one of the world’s largest fountains and a major tourist attraction in Jeddah. The fountain was named after King Fahd, the former King of Saudi Arabia. It was built in 1985. The Red Sea fountain blasts water up to a height of more than 300 metres (1000 feet). This makes it one of the world’s highest fountains and is generally seen as a symbol of the city of Jeddah.

  • Safa and Marwa ( The Religious part of Hajj and Umrah)

Safa and Marwa are two small hills in Makkah’s Masjid al-Haram. They are an essential part of the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages. It is linked to the tale of Prophet Ibrahim and his wife Hagar. According to Islamic legend, God directed Prophet Ibrahim to abandon his wife Hagar and their young son Ismail in the desolate desert of Makkah. Hagar travelled back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwa in quest of water for her kid.  After their rations ran out miraculously, a spring of water known as the Zamzam well appeared at her son’s feet, providing them with food.

Pilgrimage tours are increasingly popular in Saudi Arabia, and bus travel is one of the most common ways of transportation for these religious excursions.
